SHOOT THE WEATHERMAN

By

Jim Hill

The Weatherman declared a 30% chance of showers for tournament day at Green Peter Reservoir and boy did he miss it on that guess – I mean forecast.  This tournament Saturday was 100% showers 100% of the day with cold wind and occasional hard rain.

For the anglers traveling across the state, or the local pros, it was a mental adjustment preparing for yet another tournament with cold water for the fish and cold weather for the fisherman.  The determination by the ABA pros was on display as they prepared their boats equipment and of course their rain gear.

The Green Peter event marked the second tournament of the season and it was crucial for those chasing reigning champions Chris Carpenter and Travis Glass, to either have another consistent finish or bounce back from a poor finish at Ten Mile Lakes.  The ABA rules allow anglers to fish six events and throw out one tournament score and take the best five scores for Angler of the Year.  It was pivotal for some that they bounce back and get a top five finish and put last month’s event behind them.

Corey Buller and Chris Vest finished 13th at Ten Mile Lakes but made up significant ground with a 2nd place finish at Green Peter.  They now have an unofficial score of 207 which puts them in prime contention for Angler of the Year.

Michael Strickler and Eric Strickler have a similar story with their disappointing finish at Ten Mile Lakes; they sat in 17th place coming into the Green Peter event.  They managed to catch a limit of 5 fish and weighed-in 8.8 pounds to capture the 3rd place spot.

Chris Carpenter and Travis Glass open the door slightly to let us all peek in and look at the top spot on the leader board.  They made everyone’s jaws drop at the 27 pounds they weighed in at Ten Mile, crushing the rest of the field.  Their 8th place finish at Green Peter has given hope to many that this might be the year to dethrone these two masters of rod and reel on the ABA circuit; and just such a team is Kevin Ford and Tom McVay.

Kevin and Tom leaped to the top spot from their 5th place finish at Ten Mile and persevered at Green Peter winning the event with 5 bass weighing 9.48 pounds.  Their unofficial point total is at 216 which put them 3 points ahead of Carpenter and Glass.

Another team showing great consistency is Arthur Ferreira Sr. and Ron Hansen.  These two water pirates, or Raiders as they are tagged, are sitting primed to make the kill going into our next event at Fern Ridge.  They have two top five finishes taking 4th at Ten Mile and 5th at Green Peter and having an unofficial score of 213.

Kory Ray and Keith Truett took home the big fish honors with a 4 pound largemouth, which was truly impressive at Green Peter where the average size weighed-in was less than 2 pounds.

Fern Ridge Reservoir is shaping up to be the biggest event of the young season.  It will mark the half way point and teams will either firmly set themselves atop the leader board, get back in contention, or dig a bigger deficit. We have the perfect place to battle it out!  We have a lake not usually on the tournament schedule that has been giving up big bags of fish.  The spawn is still to come for the bass and the timing for the event should put us either right in the middle of it or near to it.  Come one, come all to the Fern Ridge shoot out and let’s see who can make the separation from the pack and be the favorite for the Angler of the Year.

I know one thing for sure; I am packing a shot gun.  Because if it rains, I gunna shoot me a weatherman!
